Mike graduated from Alexandria College's Hotel and Restaurant Management program in 2001 with a dream of owning a restaurant. While a student, he worked as an assistant kitchen manager at D Michael B’s in Alexandria. The college’s strong reputation and proximity to his hometown made it the perfect fit for him.
Kellie took a different path. She graduated from the Practical Nursing program in 2010 and earned her Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) in 2012. Kellie was a non-traditional student who had to balance school, work, and family while pursuing her passion for nursing. Driven to make a meaningful impact on her community, Kellie credits her instructors with providing the guidance and support that fueled her determination.
Mike and Kellie’s professional paths eventually led them back to D Michael B’s—a beloved Alexandria restaurant founded by Dave and Deb Bistodeau. Mike's dream of owning a restaurant was deeply rooted in his years working at D Michael B’s from 1999 to 2004.
Kellie’s connection to the restaurant was even more personal—her mother worked for the Bistodeaus, and as a child, Kellie earned her allowance by helping clean the restaurant.
In 2023, Mike and Kellie made the bold decision to continue the legacy of D Michael B’s, reopening it as D Mike’s. They brought back the beloved elements of the original restaurant, including its artwork, back bar, and iconic signs like the Brass Lantern. They even brought back the signature menu items such as chicken wild rice soup, fall-off-the-bone ribs, and chicken pot pie. The food pays homage to the past while adding a modern twist.
D Mike’s is more than a restaurant—it is a story of legacy and love. Every detail, from the décor to the food, reflects the history of D Michael B’s while embracing a contemporary vision. Mike and Kellie are proud to have welcomed back many former staff members, creating a warm, familiar atmosphere.
“Our goal is to provide more than just a meal,” says Kellie. “We want our restaurant to preserve our history and share in the pride we have continuing this chapter of Alexandria’s history.”
The skills and knowledge Mike and Kellie gained at Alexandria College have been pivotal to their success. From management techniques to interpersonal skills, their education prepared them to navigate the challenges of business ownership. Their advice to students and aspiring entrepreneurs is clear.
“Take advantage of every opportunity at Alexandria College," Mike said. "Join DECA and other clubs, pursue internships, and surround yourself with like-minded individuals. Never stop learning and never give up.”
The story of Mike and Kellie Daniels demonstrates the power of education, passion, and purpose. Their journey from Alexandria College students to successful restaurant owners is a testament to the impact of a strong college and community connection. As they look to the future, their mission remains steadfast: preserving the legacy of D Mike’s. “Legacy inspired; community infused” is not just a tagline it is their way of life.
