While some BU grads stay local to work after graduation, others use their degree to travel the world and work abroad. One such BU graduate is Miles Green, who works for visual effects company Animal Logic in Sydney, Australia.

After graduating from BU with a degree in Computer Animation and Visualisation, Miles鈥 first foray into the world of work was at 成人直播, working as a demonstrator on the computer animation courses.

Miles reflected on his move from BU to Australia saying, 鈥淚n those 3 years [at 成人直播]聽I had the opportunity聽to focus on my own projects, specialise in FX processes and also聽get to know the Computer Animation聽course鈥檚聽visiting lecturers very聽well.聽One of these visiting lecturers had travelled from聽California from聽George聽Lucas's聽company聽ILM and聽shortly after visiting聽Bournemouth聽he聽moved to聽Australia聽to supervise the FX聽department聽on a new聽penguin film called 'Happy Feet'.

鈥淚 was in luck - Animal Logic offered me an interview to join聽the FX team, and聽other than聽a short break聽I've been here for 10 years and聽now supervise the FX Department.鈥

Subsequently, Miles has had the chance to work on movies such as The Great Gatsby and The Lego Movie, using the skills he gained during his course in the process.

Miles continued, 鈥淚 was very lucky that the course I studied covered a wide scope of 3D聽topics.聽Unlike most聽3D courses it did not just focus on teaching computer聽software but聽taught both the technical聽background聽fundamentals of 3D such as Programming, Scripting and聽Mathematics.

鈥淭he course聽also聽complemented聽the technical work by聽encouraging聽our creative side though life drawing,聽character聽design,聽story聽boarding, and film language.

鈥淭his broad spectrum of teaching was also聽combined with projects that were聽co-run with聽industry聽practitioners聽and聽backed up聽with聽specialist聽industry and talks. All of this prepared聽me for the wide range of聽challenges聽we face most聽days in creating shots and tools for visual effects.鈥

The broad spectrum of teaching is as appreciated by employers as it is by employees. Nick Hore is a recruiter at Animal Logic and said, 鈥淕enerally Bournemouth graduates come to Animal Logic with a good blend of artistic and technical skills, and a solid grounding in the whole digital production process. They have a sense of where they are in terms of their career development and are open to learn and be a part of a team.鈥

Animal Logic currently has six BU graduates based in Australia, with a further two working in Miles鈥 team. Nick Hore explains why BU graduates are the sort of animators the industry needs, 鈥淲e like new graduates to be aware that they are just starting out on their career and have a whole lifetime of learning ahead of them. They should have a strong and genuine interest in their field and in film making in general.

鈥淢ost people starting out with us come in to a specific department but we do like people who are willing and able to try new disciplines and tools. And finally we like people who are prepared to roll their sleeves up and get their hands dirty, if that鈥檚 not a mixed metaphor. Bournemouth grads tend to have all of these characteristics, so yes, they are well prepared.鈥

Meeting another BU graduate is not uncommon in Miles鈥 line of work 鈥 in fact, animators with a BU degree can be found in most visual effects company. Miles said, 鈥淚t鈥檚 almost impossible to go to any large computer animation company and not find a Bournemouth 3D聽graduate. Currently there are 6 working at聽Animal聽logic, but I've worked聽some shorter stints at 3D聽companies聽where the graduate聽number聽has been close to 100.聽

鈥淢any of the聽London聽based聽companies have so many聽Bournemouth graduates, that to outsiders, it may feel聽like聽a strange聽cult! It can聽come聽in very handy when you're working and聽travelling聽to new countries. You can turn up somewhere new and聽there's聽always a friendly聽Bournemouth聽face happy to show you around. It鈥檚 also worth noting this industry can be great to travel and see the world. I'd encourage any graduates to apply overseas, we are always聽looking聽for聽talented聽crew!鈥
